History
The Summit Chase building, located at 1000 Urlin Avenue in Grandview Heights, Ohio, is a prominent high-rise residential structure with a notable place in the city’s history. The site on which Summit Chase stands has roots dating back to the late 19th century, when George Cambridge Urlin, one of the area’s early developers, built his home there and platted the surrounding land as Urlin’s Grandview Heights. You can read more about this at the Granview Heights / Marble Cliff Historical Society here and here.
This early development helped shape the neighborhood’s character and set the stage for future residential growth.
Legacy
Summit Chase has played a significant role in Grandview Heights’ residential landscape. The building is recognized for its panoramic views and its status as one of the tallest structures in the area.
One of Summit Chase’s most distinguished former residents was John Glenn, the famed astronaut and U.S. Senator from Ohio (1974–1999). Glenn’s association with the building adds an indelible connection to our nation's history and highlights Summit Chase’s appeal to notable figures in the community.
Community
The development of Summit Chase marked a shift in Grandview Heights’ housing options, introducing high-rise condominium living to a city previously characterized by single-family homes and smaller apartment buildings. Its presence reflects the broader trends of urbanization and suburban modernization that shaped Columbus and its neighboring communities in the latter half of the 20th century.
Summit Chase continues to be a well-known address in Grandview Heights, symbolizing both the city’s historical evolution and its embrace of modern residential lifestyles. The building’s history and amenities blend with the needs of current residents which comprise nearly 5% of Grandview Heights.
